Time to be seen and heard: Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

Just about every month of the American calendar uses month long celebrations to bring awareness of an issue, honor an event, or commemorate a cause. March is usually known for Women’s History Month, however, did you know it is also Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month?!?! I had no idea about this observance, meanwhile I have a brother & son with Autism!!

Instituted by President Ronald Regan in 1987, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month urged Americans to provide “the encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.” The goal of this celebration is to bring awareness and provide the chance for people with developmental disabilities to live constructive lives. This notion was especially important after the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, in which workplace discrimination against people with disabilities became a violation. In 2004, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) guaranteed of early intervention, special education and services to transition high schoolers into adulthood. This law provided even more opportunities for this population.

Some well known people with a developmental disability include Chris Burke (actor), Temple Grandin (scientist/activist), Jamie Brewer (actress), Heather Kuzmich (model), Geri Jewell (actress), Rene Kirby (actor), Maria Batalova (Russian ice hockey player), etc. The list goes on & on. Ability & Beyond Fitness has accepted the calling and the honor to help people with developmental (& intellectual) disabilities fully participate in their environment through health & fitness. How will you honor Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month? Make sure you leave a comment below and let us know how you plan to celebrate or if you know someone with a developmental disability!
